All Staff Communication: Letter from Joe
Team,
From the early days of HCT, the majority of our team has been made up of men and women of color who’ve been negatively impacted by the criminal justice system. This wasn’t by accident – our business was built to create opportunity for those many who’ve had it taken away. And we know this system and hundreds of years of institutional racism have disproportionately singled out black Americans.
As you know from working here, our business is stronger because our people are stronger. Period. And because of this, I believe we have an opportunity to contribute to the community even further in this moment in history – but HCT and I need your help. The voice of HCT matters significantly less than all your individual voices. I believe HCT’s role is to elevate the voices that matter most in this broad community dialogue.
HCT, nor I, claim to have all the answers, but we do know that being silent isn’t an option. As we gather feedback from you, our community of guests, and our business partners, we are committed to action. With all your feedback to date, here’s what we’ve accomplished together:
– Made a public statement about our commitment to BLM and moving our community forward
– Created this site to serve as a hub for our activities
– Modified our Police Discount policy so all money earned by serving police officers goes directly to justice-focused causes
– Partnered with other restaurants via FoodIndustryAction.com to give 5% of sales on 6/27 to the the NAACP Legal Defense Fund
– We’ve kicked off our internal task force to keep HCT accountable to action
All of these initiatives are our starting point. Thank you for your support and willingness to dialogue. Black lives matter.
